OPUS LAW represents C in Modern Day Slavery Case

Sarah Batty, Director, was instructed by C who originally faced a 13 count indictment alleging conspiracy to traffic workers from Slovakia to Leeds before exploiting them. The allegations, involving seven co-accused, 5 of whom were members of the same family, was prosecuted as Operation Angelstoke. The case was concluded following a ten week trial at Bradford Crown Court.

Expert London counsel was instructed- James Tilbury of Carmelite Chambers- and through meticulous preparation and expert advocacy skills a successful submission of no case to answer was made at the end of the Prosecution case resulting in Not Guilty verdicts being entered in relation to a number of the counts leaving the defendant facing only 3 counts.

Following the verdicts of the jury compelling mitigation was put forward on behalf of C such that her resulting sentence was one of only 3 years as opposed to the 9 year sentence laid down in relation to one of her codefendants.
